The Ijaw people are one of the oldest ethnic groups in Africa and have been living in the Niger Delta region for over 5,000 years.

Archaeological findings of the Ijaw people have been dated to as far back as the early 800s BCE.

The Ijaw people are believed to be the descendants of the Oru, an ancient tribe of Africa, and are also related to the founders of the Great Nile Valley civilization complex.

The ancestors of the Ijaw people moved from the Nile Valley to West Africa during antiquity.

The Ijaw people have their own language, which is one of the oldest languages of Africa.

Ijaw people were also know as ijo, many were found as migrants fishermen from west Africa Sierra Leone and far east Gabon
