In 1964, Edna Park made history as the first “Miss Nigeria” to compete on the global stage at the “Miss Universe” pageant. Born in 1944, she became the “8th Miss Nigeria” at just 19 years old, earning national recognition and paving the way for future African beauty queens. Her participation in Miss Universe 1964 was groundbreaking-she was not only Nigeria’s first representative but also the “First Black African woman” to grace the prestigious competition.

Held in Miami Beach, Florida, the 1964 Miss Universe pageant was a moment of triumph and unexpected heartbreak for Edna. When the finalists were announced and her name was missing, she collapsed on stage, overwhelmed by emotion. The incident led to her being carried off and admitted to a hospital for observation. Upon her return to Nigeria, she faced media scrutiny and ridicule, but her legacy as a pioneer in African pageantry remained intact.

Beyond the world of beauty, Edna Park’s life was rich with personal and professional milestones. She had a significant relationship with Olorogun Felix Ibru, the future first civilian governor of Delta State, with whom she had two children. Though Felix Ibru later paid her dowry after her father’s passing, they never formalized their union through marriage.

In 1967, she relocated to the United Kingdom, where she built a career in beauty and fashion. She founded “Sherina Hair Care”, a well-regarded beauty shop in England. Later in life, she transitioned into social care, dedicating her time to working with the elderly before retiring as a professional caregiver.

On January 15, 2025, after a brief illness, Edna Park passed away in London, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, elegance, and groundbreaking achievements.
