Fish from my small backyard fish farm.
This fish weighs about 800 grams in less than 3 months from stocking day.
Whoever that says that you can’t get a fish of 1kg within 3-4 months is a lie.
The success starts from the sourcing of the fingerlings, I got the fingerlings from our research farm where we hatched a batch of fries, also I…Read More2 Comments -
*FISH BOOSTER*
A booster is any substance that help to achieve your target result in a lesser time than normal.
It has a similar function as a catalyst which help to speed up chemical reactions. For fish, a business minded farmer would want to achieve result faster while spending less on feed and other fish Farming expenses.
However, in…Read More

Of a truth there is nothing like fish growth booster in fish farming.
-
okay. Is the booster a type of feed? How expensive is it vis a vis cost of production of fish?
-
Foreign feeds are known to contain reasonable amount of crude protein, because of this they are regarded as fish growth booster. For early stage of mostly catfish (Clarias gariepinus) good feed like the foreign feeds (coppens or aller aqua) are highly recommended thereafter you can switch to Nigeria made feed like blue crown.
-
1.5mm of coppens which is 5kg is around 60k+. Blue crown is around 24k, 22.8k, 21k for 3mm, 4mm, and 6mm respectively.

Setting up a farm.
Under this topic we will consider the following
1. Where to site ur farm
2. Things to consider before setting up a farm
3. Types of farm
4. Rearing receptacles
5. Advantage/disadvantage of the diff receptacles
6. Possible things needed in a farm.1 Comment -
Let me first answer this question first, NO over feeding will not kill your fish, fish when satisfied stop picking feed. A fish feed pellets has Abt 10mins floating and non disintegration ability but will disintegrate gradually when not eaten which will lead to ammonia accumulation in the pond, high ammonia kills fish. Another thing is that u are…Read More

Problems face by fish farmers.
1. Inadequate knowledge before starting: most farmers set up fish farm without knowing anything abt the operation/biz at all. No knowledge Abt feeding, stocking density, sorting/grading, water management. All they want is just to buy the fish and pour into water cause they heard fish is another oil well 😁. I…Read More

Not knowing the market preference is another problem face by farmers. You will see farmers complaining Abt not seeing buyers to buy there fish. Most of this farmers rear fish up to 2kg and above whereas for example what the buyers want is fish ranging from 0.8kg to 1.5kg.

Opportunities in fish farming.
There are many opportunities in fish farming, ranging from :
1. Selling fingerlings (hatching)
2. Melange production (catfish of Abt 400g to 600g)
3. Table size production (1kg and above)
4. Broodstock production (1 years and above) this one is a bit technical.
5. Pond construction
6. Local feed…Read More1 Comment-

Intro to fish farming.
This is the rearing/culturing of finfish/shellfish, aquatic plant or any other aquatic animal in a control environment. It’s a control environment because u constantly manage the system (pond) to be suitable for the stocked fish. This venture involves the knowledge of water management (physico-water parameters, effluent…Read More

The finfish are catfish, tilapia, Heterotis niloticus (arawana), salmon, sturgeon, mudfish, any of the carp, Pike, etc.
-
Any fish that have fin is called finfish. We are more comcern here with culturable finfish. I.e catfish, tilapia, carp, arawana, snakehead fish.
-
-
Planktons (zooplankton) i.e coppode, artemia, are culture. Phytoplankton like algea are also culture. Aquatic plant like dockweed are cultured.

Tomorrow we will start better but then, we have heard that fish farming is very lucrative. And most farms have stopped operation 🤷. Does it mean that the business is a dead end investment? And others are having results, buying cars and building houses. Infact that’s the only business they are into. So what’s the diff between the farm that stopped…Read More

Now use the upper value at ur right hand side which is 37.7 to divide 69.25 times 99… That’s 37.7/69.35 *100 = 53.89kg of protein feedstuff materials will be needed for the formulation.
Now use the lower value at ur right hand side which is 31.55 to divide 69.25 times 99… That’s 31.55/69.25 * 99 = 45.10kg of energy feedstuff materials will…Read More1 Comment -
Yesterday I talked abt how to fix the values of energy and protein source. The calculation still continue. On ur right hand side minus the upper value from the lower value.. thats 37.7-31.55= 69.25. on the left hand side add up the upper value to the lower value.. that’s 76.55-7.3= 69.25 the values at both sode must be equally.
-
Good evening, I will continue with the explanation of the calculation. I could not complete it yesterday cause my phone was almost down..
Today will continue.
-
To get the values of your right hand side minus the value of your protein at the top left hand from the 45%cp, that’s 76.55 – 45%cp = 31.55 fix this value at the bottom right hand side.
Minus the value of energy at the bottom left hand side from the 45%cp, that’s 7.3 – 45%cp = 37.7 fix this value at upper right hand side. -
To get the value of ur protein, kindly add up all the nutrient composition of
Protein, GNC and soybeans together and divide by 2. What you get is 76.55. do the same with energy source.. what you will get is 7.3. -
Explanation for the calculation..
If you are to formulate fish feed of 45% c.p for your 1month juvenile using the following:
For energy source
Maize, cassava.
For Protein source
Fishmeal, GNC, soybeans.
USINg PEARSON’S METHOD.
At the upper right hand of rectangle fix your Protein value and at the bottom right hand fix your energy value,…Read More1 Comment-
