Ibrahim Coomassie was a renowned Nigerian police officer who served as the 9th Inspector General of the Nigerian Police from 1993 to 1999. Born on March 18, 1942, in Katsina State, Coomassie came from a family of distinction, being the son of Malam Ahmadu Coomassie, a respected educationist and businessman.

Coomassie’s educational background was impressive, having attended prestigious institutions such as the Provincial Secondary School, Zaria, Barewa College, Zaria, and the Detective Training College in Wakefield, UK. He also underwent specialized training in police administration and security investigation in the United States.

During his tenure as Inspector General, Coomassie was involved in several significant events, including the investigation into police actions during General Ibrahim Babangida’s military rule and the arrest of president-elect M.K.O. Abiola in 1994. However, Coomassie’s leadership was also marred by controversy, including allegations of human rights abuses and corruption.

After retiring from the police force in 1999, Coomassie remained active in public life, serving on various committees and boards, including the Arewa Consultative Forum. He also engaged in philanthropic activities, donating laboratory equipment to a secondary school in Katsina State.

Coomassie passed away on July 19, 2018, at the age of 76, leaving behind a complex legacy as a police officer and public figure.
