DEATH IN HISTORY
1971, NOVEMBER 18. Alvan Ikoku died. Professor Alvan Ikoku was born on August 1, 1900, indigene of Arochukwu in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. He attended Government School and Hope Waddell College, Calabar; University of London where he obtained a Bachelor degree in Philosophy in 1928 by Correspondence. He was appointed teacher in 1920 at the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, Itigidi. Senior Tutor in 1922 with St. Paul’s Teachers’ Training College, Awka, Anambra State. He is the founder, Aggrey Memorial College, Arochukwu, 1931. He was nominated to the Eastern Nigeria House of Assembly and assigned to the Ministry of Education. He was a Representative of the Eastern Region, Legislative Council, Lagos, 1947. He was a Fellow, Nigeria Union of Teachers; Member, West African Examination Council; Member, Council of the University of Ibadan; Chairman, Board of Governors, Aviation Training Centre. AWARD: Honorary Doctorate in Law, (1965), University of Ibadan; Alvan Ikoku college of Education, Owerri. He is the face on the Nigerian currency ten Naira Note.
