A young girl once asked an elderly woman, “Do I really need friends in life?”
The elderly woman, full of wisdom, responded, “Yes, my dear. Life is difficult, and you need someone by your side—someone you can talk to for hours without feeling judged, someone whose shoulder you can cry on, and someone who will offer emotional support. When no one else is there for you, they will be. They’ll be with you in the good times and help you through the tough ones.”
The girl, curious, then asked, “Is it true that a fake friend is worse than an enemy?”
With a knowing look, the elderly woman replied, “Yes, that’s true. The thing is, you know who your enemies are and you keep your distance. But a fake friend pretends to be close, earning your trust. They learn your secrets, your weaknesses, and your dreams. And when the time comes, they know exactly how to betray you.”
Concerned, the girl asked, “So how can I avoid fake friends?”
After a brief pause, the elderly woman posed a question of her own, “Between a small garden and a large forest, which one do you think has more snakes and scorpions?”
The girl quickly answered, “The forest, of course!”
The elderly woman smiled and said, “Exactly. When you keep your circle small, like a garden, there are fewer snakes, scorpions, and rats to deal with. A smaller circle of friends means fewer issues. When I was younger, I had a large group of friends, but over time, as I gained wisdom, my circle got smaller. I learned that quality matters far more than quantity when it comes to friendship. Don’t deceive yourself into believing that everyone is your friend. You may know many people, but true friends will always be just a few who you love and trust. The best way to avoid fake friends is to keep your circle small and close.”
