The year was 1912 under imperial rule when the port was put to local and international use for routing goods to the Niger Delta ;South south.
The region which later was known as Portharcout was named in honour of Lewis Harcourt under the administration of the then governor of Nigeria Sir Frederick Luggard in 1913.
Port Harcourt is the capital and largest city in Rivers State and one of fastest growing cities in Nigeria.
It is the second most culturally diverse city and fourth most populous city in Nigeria, behind Lagos, Kano and Ibadan
It is known for its oil industry and rich cultural heritage
It is the third most sought-after city for Real Estate investment and Fashion
It is the host city for Bole Festival, the largest food festival in Africa
In 2014, Port Harcourt was recognised by UNESCO as World Book Capital, first of its kind in black African city.
