Lassa fever is a viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) that’s common in West Africa. Symptoms typically appear 1–3 weeks after exposure to the virus.
Symptoms include:
Fever, General weakness, Malaise, Headache, Sore throat, Muscle pain, Chest pain, Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Cough, Abdominal pain.
1 in 5 infections can lead to severe disease, where the virus affects the liver, spleen, and kidneys.
Lassa fever is treated with ribavarin, an antiviral drug
. Early treatment with ribavarin is an effective treatment.
About 15–20% of patients hospitalized for Lassa fever die from the illness, but only 1% of all Lassa virus infections result in death.1 Comment
The hardship is unbearable. We don’t need lassa fever.
