Salicornia is a genus of flowering plants that are native to North and West Africa, as well as other regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The genus includes about 25–30 species.
Salicornia plants are succulents that can tolerate salt and grow in salt marshes, beaches, and mangroves. They are annuals with small leaves and a spike-like terminal inflorescence.
Salicornia plants contain many nutrients, including fibers, polyphenols, and flavonoids. They are also rich in mineral salts, vitamins A, B1, B15, C, potassium, calcium, beta-carotene, and iodine. The plants’ high water content has a diuretic and purifying effect.
Salicornia seeds can be used to make edible oil and biofuel. The oil is high in protein and rich in linoleic, oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids.
Salicornia is also known as glasswort. It is the source of green salt which is a good alternative for people having issues with high blood pressure.1 Comment
