Throughout history, the act of supporting and serving great leaders has often paved the way for future greatness. Those who have held the proverbial “umbrella” for influential figures have frequently gone on to achieve their own remarkable success. This principle holds true across politics, business, technology, and other spheres of human endeavor. Nigeria and the world provide compelling examples of how loyalty, mentorship, and service to a visionary leader can position an individual for their own future leadership.

In Nigerian history, Chief James Ogboko Edewor (1923-2008), the Olokun of Ekun, served as an aide to Chief Festus Samuel Okotie-Eboh (the Omimi Ejo; 1912-1966). By holding the umbrella for him—both literally and figuratively—Edewor learned leadership, political strategy, and governance. His service earned him the respect and recognition that later elevated him to a significant leadership position.

Another modern Nigerian example is the political relationship between Nyesom Wike and Goodluck Jonathan. Wike was a staunch supporter of Jonathan and played a key role in his administration. His loyalty and service to Jonathan’s government positioned him for greater leadership opportunities, ultimately leading to his emergence as the Governor of Rivers State. Many world leaders have also risen through ranks by initially supporting a great personality. One of the most famous examples is Barack Obama’s former Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel. Emanuel played a key role in Obama’s administration and was later elected as the Mayor of Chicago, proving that being close to power can lead to significant leadership opportunities.

Similarly, in South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa was a key supporter and right-hand man of Nelson Mandela during the country’s transition from apartheid to democracy. By standing by Mandela’s side, he gained invaluable political experience and credibility, which eventually led him to become South Africa’s President.

In business, many top executives began their careers under the guidance of influential figures. Apple’s Tim Cook worked closely under Steve Jobs before becoming CEO. By holding the umbrella for Jobs, Cook learned Apple’s business philosophy and strategic vision, which positioned him to lead the company successfully after Jobs’ passing.

By learning from them and proving his capabilities, he eventually rose to the highest position in the company.

Similarly, Elon Musk worked with notable figures in the technology and finance sectors before launching Tesla, SpaceX, and other groundbreaking ventures. His ability to learn and serve under influential individuals played a role in his development as a revolutionary entrepreneur.

History is filled with examples of individuals who served as aides, protégés, or understudies before rising to prominence. In ancient Rome, Augustus Caesar served under Julius Caesar and ultimately became one of the greatest emperors of Rome. In the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson served as Vice President under John F. Kennedy before becoming President after Kennedy’s assassination.

Holding the umbrella for a great leader does not signify servitude; rather, it is a strategic opportunity for learning, networking, and personal development. Those who support and serve influential figures gain insights, connections, and credibility that often propel them to greatness. From Chief Edewor in Nigeria to global figures like Tim Cook, Sundar Pichai, and Cyril Ramaphosa, history proves that the path to leadership is often paved by serving those who have already attained greatness. Thus, the lesson is clear: supporting and learning from a visionary today may secure your own place as a great leader tomorrow.
